Discovering a Love For Design

Jan Hales Strickland discovered her love for design and decorating at a young age. Extensive travel, both abroad and throughout the United States, along with visits to museums and historic homes, have long served as her greatest sources of inspiration. During her childhood, her parents rented a countryside home in England each summer, exposing her early to European architecture and design. These experiences, combined with travel to many different countries throughout her life, deeply shaped her design perspective.

By high school, Jan knew she wanted to pursue a career in interior design. She began working on beach condos and residential projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience that further fueled her passion for the field.

Beginning a Designer’s Journey

Jan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where she graduated from the CIDA-accredited program. While in college, she was an active student member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and later served on the advisory council for CIDA accreditation within the University of Alabama’s Interior Design program.

An Allied member of ASID since 2010, Jan launched her own design firm that same year. Her professional background includes experience at a kitchen design center in Birmingham, Alabama; a fabric and décor showroom in Montgomery, Alabama; and a nationally recognized antique store, also in Montgomery. These diverse experiences shaped her well-rounded, layered design approach.

While building her business, Jan also authored her coffee table book, Interiors for Living, available both locally and online. This book showcases her work throughout the years and serves as inspiration for professionals and home owners alike.

Living and Loving Her Southern Roots

Based in North Louisiana, she is also proud to have served as lead designer for the Monroe, Louisiana St. Jude Dream Home for the past six years. All homes have sold out of tickets and have raised a total of over 3.8 million dollars towards St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Jan resides in rural North Louisiana with her husband, Josh, their children, Jey and Evy, and their dogs, Belle, Bingo, and Banksy.

Recognition and Awards

Her work has earned numerous awards and honors, including the University of Alabama HES Jack Davis Professional Achievement Award in Interior Design, Bayou Buzz Finalist (2020–2023), Top 20 Under 40 Nominee for Monroe, Louisiana, and recognition from Marquis Who’s Who. Jan’s designs have been featured in Bayou Life Magazine, Style Me Pretty Living, Cottage Journal (French Cottage), Build.com, HGTV, and many other publications.
